Optimism

I started a table for my mother I 'm hoping I can get it finished before Christmas!!
I'm sure it'll happen, I say with optimism ...
There's was chunky redwood hiding under a tarp, this is what I'm using..
I cut off the sections , then set about them with my old wooden coffin plane..
D Malloch and Sons Perth is the maker, a good Scottish plane...
This is an old family plane given to me earlier in the year.. Some posts about it if you care to trawl through... Anyhoo this little plane is just the tool to scrub off the shavings and clean up these slabs..... I also started the housings for the legs, using my old no 71 plane...
A good work out for the arms over the past couple of days...
Take a look and see... ;b

Pop

You saw these previously but they didn't pop like this... The box was waxed , but the table top I drenched with Danish oil , the legs were waxed many times to make them glow ... I think a chair will be my next project... ;b

Rack Em

Made these little racks today out of some small pieces of Yew..
With Christmas creeping up fast these little racks...

Could come in handy for budding chefs, or bean stirrers... ;b

Botanics...

Well I did go to see the furniture at the Botanic Gardens.. But I had to take a look around the parkland at all the beautiful tree's!! ;b

I've not visited the botanics for over 20 years.. I won't stay away for as long next time... ;b

Inspired

Today I headed into the city to the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh..
To take a look at the Makers By commission, exhibition. Showcasing the Scottish Furniture Makers Association .. All these pieces are made out of Elm which was cut down in the city, in another park called the meadows..
So I had a little meander round and met one of the makers, who lives not far from me it turns out..
Some really special work here very inspiring... Have a look for yourself...;b

Into The Swing...

I got the legs fitted into the table today...
Maybe I'll add some bracing, not sure as yet though..
The light ash legs work well with the darker elm top... It's far from finished but you'll get the idea... Kind of been side tracked lately, but  now I'm getting back into the swing...
And yes a trip to the workshop isn't complete without carving a quick spoon...;b

In The Way

I headed out today intending to do something on the table.
That I started the other week, but a piece of cherry that needed to be a spoon got in the way..
And here it is...;b

Elm And Insulation..

A little Elm table top with some ash legs.. Was started this weekend the legs have nice little curve to them which will throw them out a bit... Also notice the shiny walls in the picture, as I have insulated for the cooler weather arriving...

And what about this nice big slab of Elm, this will be a garden bench in time for next summer....;b

Wedged In Tight

A couple of posts back I showed you folks two axe heads..
I tried to find decent handles for these but it was a struggle.
So I thought I would give it a go myself, and make them. I got a hold of some Ash, and here's how it all worked out..
A lot of work with the drawknife to get the rough shape...
Spoke shaves smoothed them down to fit my hands...
wedged in tight... ;b

Protected by a stone

I find myself up here a lot lately its a good place to gather your thoughts.. This is where I noticed a stone that looked out of place! Built into a drystone wall.. This stone at Witchcraig, has a cross carved into it on the east facing side, and on the west facing side the cross is relief carved ..
I made some enquiries with a man, that I knew would have the answers .. And I was told that, this is a refuge stone, one of four set at one mile boundaries from Torphican precepatory, these stones marked with the cross of Lorraine. Gave people refuge while on the run from the law, or other pursuers. Where they would be safe within the boundary of the stones...
East face of the refuge stone...
West face of the refuge stone...

And here are a few views from around the stone, up among the heather..

You can maybe see why I like it up there... ;b
