More To Come
I had a bit of a sanding session yesterday sanding the top and legs of the table for my sister , the timber is looking nice with some olive veins in the light coloured timber . Hopefully this coming week , I can put it all together.
I also cut and cleaned out some nice tight joints where the legs fix to the top and I have an idea for a little quirky brace , more to come on this :)

When The Sun Came Out
Well when the sun came out for while on boxing day , I headed out to feel the sun on my face as its been a while ! a twisted beech caught my eye along with an old dead elm with lots of burrs-burls covering it . And on my way back the sun shining through the spruce it was good to get out for a while ;)

As Promised
Christmas is just two sleeps away now, I got all that shopping caper, done and dusted yesterday !! So I was free to head out to the shed for a while today, I promised my sister that I would make her a waney edged table so I got stuck in to this cleaning up the timber, and making a big pile of shavings in the process. I'm using field maple for this table , a pleasant way to spend an afternoon on a wild wet day, piling up curly shavings ;)

Side Tracked Spoon
I looked out a few boards to get started on a little table, for my sister . But somewhere along the way I got side tracked with a little apple spoon . I'm hooked on these spoons I love to sit and dream, listen to some music and whittle away ;)

Spalted Spoons
I had an afternoon making some spoons , out of a bit of spalted beech . I must be getting better! no blood spilled while carving out these spoons with super sharp tools. The spoons will have to dry out before use, but they look neat with the spalting in the timber ;)

One Little Apple Seed
Well all this and more came from one little apple seed that grew into a tree then died. So working between the cracks I tried to salvage as much as I could from my chunk, that a neighbour handed in. From the widest piece I managed a chopping board then a couple of nice little cups from a cup sized chunk and another scrap told me it should be a spoon. I had a couple of enjoyable afternoons hanging in the shed scooping out these little cups and whittling scrap into a spoon . And there's still a little left! What do you think ;)

Maple Horses
I took last weekend off from blogging , as it was (:(: !!!! Matthew's 13th birthday !!!! :) :)
This morning it started out frosty ,then after the frost lifted a nice cold heavy rain took its place . I braved the rain and toddled down to the shed to start some hobby horses as Christmas is just around the corner . This time I'm using field maple , here they are so far :)

Improvising
What a wet day! I forced myself to head into the shed today and do a bit more on the bench . They want their names and the date on the bench, I carved these in but I thought it would hard to see the words in the light coloured timber.
So I thought of pyrography! after a comment on one of my posts. I don't have any of this kit so I had to improvise and a soldering iron fitted the bill.
This worked out fine and gave a good rustic look. I also bored and countersunk all the holes for the fixing's .I screwed it all together for a look at thing's and I was pretty pleased with it, and then stripped it back down again for a final sanding, before the glue and screw no going back bit :)

Shaping Up
I spent a few hours in the shed today working on the bench . The back legs needed to be a bit more elegant , so I cut a shallow curve out of them both and blended this in with the spokeshave . This gives a better look I think . More housings were cut for the backrest so that the back legs fit nicely and it gives me a chance to use one of my favourites. My record (No 71) router plane this gives me a nice clean flat joint and ensures that both housings are the same depth . I put it all together with a couple of clamps and wedged up the back to see how it was shaping up :)

Autumn Jewels
The weather this weekend has been great, with warm autumn sun and watery blue sky.
I headed out on the bike for a couple of hours this morning, and with the leaves starting to sprinkle down to the ground it was good to be out cycling and hearing them rustle beneath the tyres.
Our long summer this year certainly shows it's self, when you take a look at the berry laden hedgerows . Heavy with hip's,haws and brambles to name but a few .
Take a look at these eye catching, autumn jewels :)

Took A Notion
I carved another sign this weekend I really enjoy doing these signs , and along with a little spoon that I took a notion for. Hacked out of a piece of Rowan (mountain ash) with a hatchet then tidied up with various spoon carving tools. Here's the sign and spoon :)

Bringing Letters To Life
I was going to spend a while on the garden bench today, but parts of it still need a bit of pondering time.
So I pulled out the sign that I started a few posts back. . And I got stuck in to some carving, I scored in the letters this gives me a good edge that I can work up to . After a long time scoring in these letters , I was ready to start bringing them to life .
I tend to use just a couple of chisels , to do these relief carved letters this keeps the look consistent . It's not done yet , there's still a bit of tidying up to do, but you get the picture . Keep looking in, to see it finished :)
