Alder
I messed around with some alder and made this bowl and spoon. Alder look's very pale when its first worked with a tool, but oxidises quickly and turns a rusty orange colour which is quite neat !!
I love the bowl! I cut an Alder branch a few weeks ago and carved a spoon. I guess I oiled it to soon because unfortunately it stayed white. Or is it because I microwaved the wood to keep it from cracking? Would have loved to get the orange colour.

DeleteDid you carve out that bowl from green alder? If so, the natural drying process may bring out the colour. Kiln dried alder remains light coloured.
ReplyDeleteGeorge, yes this alder is as green as the grass and soft as butter. Well not quite butter but the tools have an easy time with it !! ;)
